Mini PCIe vs. M.2: Stop Buying Wrong Wi-Fi Antenna
共有
Every single day, hundreds of buyers purchase Wi-Fi card, and order a set of antennas, then realize the cables physically cannot plug into the card.
The culprit? Misunderstanding the difference between Mini PCIe and M.2 (NGFF) form factors and the tiny RF connectors they use.
Core Difference: Form Factor
Before looking at the antenna, look at the shape of the wireless card itself.
-
Mini PCIe (Legacy): These cards are wider, almost square-shaped, and usually require two screws at the top corners to secure them down. They have been the laptop standard for over a decade.

-
M.2 / NGFF (Modern Standard): These cards are narrow, rectangular, and look like a miniature stick of gum. They require just one screw in the center of the tail to lock in.

U.FL vs. MHF4 Connectors
The physical size of the card dictates the size of the microscopic gold antenna terminals soldered onto the board. This is where everyone buys the wrong part.
1. Mini PCIe Cards use U.FL Connectors
Because Mini PCIe cards have plenty of surface space, they use the U.FL (sometimes called IPEX or IPX Generation 1) connector.
- Diameter: 2.0 mm
- Look: Relatively "large" for a micro-connector. It snaps down with a distinct click.
2. M.2 (NGFF) Cards use MHF4 Connectors
M.2 cards are thin and narrow. To fit the circuitry, engineers had to shrink the antenna pads down to a microscopic size. They use the MHF4 (IPEX Generation 4) connector.
- Diameter: 1.5 mm
- Look: Infuriatingly tiny. It feels like trying to snap a grain of sand onto a needle.
⚠️ What happen if you buy the wrong one? If you buy U.FL cable for M.2 card, the connector will slide right over the gold terminal and loose-fit without snapping. If you buy MHF4 cable for Mini PCIe card, the cable connector is physically too small and will bend or crush if you try to force it down.

Quick Check
| If Your Wireless Card Is... | Form Factor | Connector Type | Common Card Examples |
